» » Anna Hazare to visit Sri Lanka

Well known Indian social activist Anna Hazare is to visit Sri Lanka sometime this month.
Hazare started an indefinite hunger strike on 5 April 2011 to exert pressure on the Indian government to enact a stringent anti-corruption law, The Lokpal Bill, 2011 as envisaged in the Jan Lokpal Bill, for the institution of an ombudsman with the power to deal with corruption in public places.

The fast led to nation-wide protests in support. The fast ended on 9 April 2011, a day after the government accepted Hazare’s demands. The government issued a gazette notification on the formation of a joint committee, consisting of government and civil society representatives, to draft the legislation.

Meanwhile Hazare’s lawyer, Milind Pawar, told the Times of India that the activist has received death threats and they have urged the authorities to provide protection to him.

“Hazare will visit Canada and Sri Lanka some time in September. He has also received invitations from various parts of the country and abroad. Keeping the fact in mind that he is travelling to far off places, the state government should give him foolproof protection even if he refuses security cover,” he said. “It is the government’s responsibility to protect his life.”
