The virtually redundant telegram service in Sri Lanka will come to a stop from October, this year, the Information Technology and Telecommunication Ministry announced a short while ago.

 Only an average of 50 telegrams are being sent daily, it said. Sri Lanka Post is the oldest government department, which operates the service set up by colonial Dutch rulers in 1798. The British later expanded the service across the country using horse-drawn coaches to deliver mail
